About the Course

Thank you for your interest in Art at Covington Middle School Fine Arts Academy. This page will give you a brief overview of what students will experience in this course. Covington’s Art program is diverse and relevant. Every student can be successful in our class as we work together to create a positive learning environment. An art class helps students build real-life skills for success. Students learn how to work together as part of a team, evaluate their own work, constantly improve it, and build higher level problem-solving skills as they create art. In class we work with numerous mediums (drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture). We learn about artists and styles of art from throughout history. Moreover, we explore students’ unique individuality through projects that reflect their imagination, ideas, and talents. Every student has something positive to contribute as we explore art!

About Our Teachers

Starr Taylor

I have been an art teacher in AISD since 2007. I have a BFA in Studio Art from Texas State University, and an associate’s degree in Jewelry Design from Austin Community College. I studied Welding at the Handwerkskammer in Koblenz, Germany as a foreign exchange student and received a welding certificate. I am a lifelong learner and enjoy the experiences this brings.

Dawn Piper

As a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a BFA in Art Education and All-Level Texas Teacher Certification, I have roughly 35 years of experience teaching middle school art here in Austin ISD. The program I have developed is rigorous, grade-level appropriate, and enriched with art history. I feel that every student can be successful in art if they put effort into every assignment given. I enjoy working with middle-school students and look forward to a terrific art experience with all my students.

About the Work - Student Gallery

Shown here are just a few examples of the types of studio assignments done here at Covington. A student that takes art all three years may expect to work with a wide range of mediums and cover a great variety of topics.
